Ramblings

I can't stop humming the theme from 'I Dream of Jeanie'. What is wrong with me?
I think life bores me.
I had a bizarre dream two nights ago (last night I had no dreams) that Jonathan invited me to his home and we cleaned his living room.
Really, it was quite amusing.

For school, Debate, we have to debate the death penalty. What are your opinions on said subject? I'm to think of an alternative, but I can't really. I'm not for capital punishment at all, I think it's the biggest show of hypocrisy and irony ever, but alternatives fail me.

No new posts, or even comments, on the Elevate blog. No surprise there.

Someone start an argument, or at least a heated discussion...my life needs seasoning.

All righty, you asked for it...

The Bible does state in the Levitical books of the Old Testament that if a man should kill someone, he himself should be killed - this is stated 7 times in Numbers 35.

Now, however, Jesus Himself said, "You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." (Matt 5:38-41)

He also said in the same chapter, "You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (vs 43-45)

Execution was commanded and practiced in the OT, but we are now under the new covenant of Christ's blood.

Should we take this to the judicial realm, though? If the execution of every murderer were promptly and faithfully carried out each time, I think that would severely discourage murders.

But are we not also supposed to forgive?

Think of it this way... I should have been the one to die on a cross -- it would have been rightly deserved -- but Christ took my place and died on my behalf, even though He was perfect. That's called mercy.

Personally, I do think the death penalty is necessary (though unfortunate it should be so), but in the same time, I think mercy should play a part (theoretically speaking in our twisted judicial system).

If one of my loved ones were to be killed, would I be willing to speak on their murderer's behalf and pardon him/her? Would you?

Interesting question. It's all nice in theory, but when it coes down to it, it gets much more complicated.
I would have to say, in all hypocracy, no, I wouldn't try to pardon the murderer. Being human, flawed, and by nature wanting revenge, in all honesty, no.

That's why judicial, social, and political issues can be so sticky and "theorectical." What would be nice to have and what actually works are two different things, unfortunately.

Oh, yes you can.

Can you now? Hm.

Yup -- I do in government class all the time. Drives my professor nuts.
